There’s never a dull day when you have kids. From taking your children to extracurricular activities to helping with school projects, having loads of time as a parent is often a luxury that comes few and far between! The start of the school term is bound to add another layer of stress. With children heading back to school, it’s time to start thinking about breakfasts and lunches again.
What’s easy to whip up, nutritious, and delicious? How can you create more meaningful lunches? For starters, you could get your hands on South African foods in Europe! Then, you can use this list of the seven best back to school breakfast and lunch ideas as inspiration. Using South African products that you can buy in Europe, this is your ultimate guide to creating easy and nutritious meals for your children that give them a taste of home!
1. Mayhem Morning Breakfast: Overnight Maize Meal Porridge
Why leave making breakfast to the morning? It’s only going to eat into your valuable morning routine. Instead, fire up the slow cooker in the evening, chuck maize meal and milk into the cooker, and let it simmer through the night.
Overnight Slow Cooker Porridge RecipeOvernight maize meal porridge is a tried and tested South African hit for families! Better yet, you don’t even have to add sugar. The maize meal will caramelize overnight, producing a beautifully sweet flavour. Serve warm the next day for the perfect breakfast on a manic Monday or chaotic morning.
2. Health-Conscious Lunch: Biltong Salad
Spruce up a salad with a bit of biltong and serve your children a taste of home for lunch that will make their friends jealous! Biltong salad can be made with just about any type of biltong and a range of colourful vegetables. Avo, feta, mango, or berries are also awesome additions to take your salad to the next level. Be sure to make enough salad to last the week and to portion off for yourself!

4. Timely Lunch Treat: Ants On A Log / Ants on a Leaf
‘Ants on a log’ is one of those deceptive lunchtime treats that you can give your children to bribe them into eating their greens. A layer of peanut butter smeared over a stick of celery peppered with raisins is all it takes to trick your kids into healthy eating!
‘Ants on a leaf’ is our proudly South African variation to cater for kids that can’t stand celery. Using slices of apples or pears as the base and Black Cat Peanut Butter smothered on top, you can give your children the taste of home with a delicious South African snack.
5. Classic South African Lunch: Cheesy Bovril Provitas
Treat your children to the classic South African lunch snack, cheesy Bovril Provitas, or as we like to call them - ‘beefy cheesies.’ This staple is the perfect choice for a busy morning as you can get a few of them packed into a lunch box in no time!
If your children are not accustomed to the beefy flavour of Bovril, then switch it out for their favourite jam. At the end of the day, choosing crispy Provitas as the base is the best decision that you can make.
6. One-and-Done Breakfast: Egg Muffins
Another breakfast that you can prep ahead of time is egg muffins. These simple yet delicious delights are the perfect bite for a busy morning or added to lunchboxes for a midday pick-me-up!
How to Make Egg MuffinsEgg muffins can keep in the fridge, meaning you can prep a batch for the entire week. You could also spruce up your egg muffin recipe by adding a cheeky slice or two of South African traditional sliced beef biltong in each!
7. Test-Day Lunch: Tuna Mayo Crackers
Create a simple yet powerful snack for your children by topping Bakers Salticrax with tuna mayo. But, not just any mayo! Crosse & Blackwell Mayonnaise - one of South Africa’s signature spreads.
Fish like tuna and pilchards contain Omega-3 fatty acids that are beneficial for the body and brain. This snack is perfectly suited for test days! You could also swap out the tuna for pilchards, which are higher in healthy fatty acids, for an added nutritional boost.
